Napa County, CA (May 14, 2026) – A motorcycle passenger was killed after being ejected from the bike and hit by another vehicle on Tuesday, May 12, on Highway 12 near its intersection with Highway 29. The incident was reported to officials at around 1:52 p.m. The motorcycle was heading east in the left lane when it crashed into a black Honda. The passenger was thrown from the vehicle and struck by an oncoming car, resulting in fatal injuries. The motorcycle driver sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to Queen of the Valley Hospital. The identities of the driver and passenger have not been disclosed. The drivers of the other vehicles stayed at the scene and cooperated with investigators. The road was closed for approximately 90 minutes after the crash. The incident is still under investigation. We offer our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the passenger who was killed. What makes lane-splitting crashes especially dangerous on California highways? Lane-splitting—riding a motorcycle between lanes of moving or stopped traffic—is legal in California, but it poses significant dangers, especially at higher speeds.
