Moss Landing, CA (May 3, 2026) – A fatal multi-vehicle collision on Highway 1 near Moss Landing killed three people late Saturday night in Monterey County. The California Highway Patrol reports the crash happened around 10:18 p.m. on State Route 1, north of Springfield Road. Authorities report that a southbound GMC pickup truck veered across the double yellow lines, sideswiped a northbound Ford pickup, and then stayed in the wrong lane. Shortly after, the GMC smashed head-on into a Honda sedan following behind the Ford. The Honda had three occupants, all severely injured and taken to a hospital, where they subsequently died. The Ford pickup contained four occupants. A 58-year-old woman was taken to a hospital with possible injuries, while the other individuals were not reported as injured. Investigators identified the GMC driver as 51-year-old David Olaeta. Officials report that he displayed signs of alcohol intoxication at the scene. He suffered serious injuries and was rushed to a hospital, where he was subsequently arrested on suspicion of DUI. He is now facing several charges, including DUI causing injury and gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated. The names of the three victims have not been released yet, pending notification of their next of kin.
