(Carson, CA) Early Monday morning on January 19, a 38-year-old man died in a Gardena Freeway crash between a minivan and a passenger car. The California Highway Patrol reported officers were dispatched around 12:38 a.m. On the westbound 91 Freeway, just west of Central Avenue. Upon arriving, officers discovered a minivan and a car that had collided, obstructing the carpool lanes. Authorities declared one person dead at the scene. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the victim as 38-year-old Matthew Hellums. Authorities did not immediately disclose details about the vehicle he was in during the crash. A news videographer on the scene reported that one more person was injured and taken to a hospital for treatment. The crash led CHP to issue a SigAlert, closing the westbound HOV lane and lanes one, two, and three. The closure severely disrupted traffic for several hours. According to CHP, officials reopened the impacted lanes around 4:18 a.m.
