On Sunday evening, December 7, a 64-year-old pedestrian was fatally struck in an accident on the southbound 5 of Santa Ana Freeway, located just south of Valley View Avenue in Santa Fe Springs, CA. The incident took place at approximately 7:12 p.m., according to officials. An observer stated that a car drove over a person who was lying on the road. The driver failed to stop as needed and drove away. The victim was identified as Louie Haro by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office. CHP officers halted traffic at Carmenita Road and asked Caltrans to close the HOV lane along with lanes 1 and 2 while the investigation was ongoing. Information regarding the vehicle that escaped and the reason the pedestrian was on the road is still unclear. Viewpoint on the Santa Ana Freeway Incident. Due to the pedestrian death occurring on a fast-moving interstate, investigators examine various traffic safety regulations to determine potential contributing factors. When a driver does not stop after hitting someone, police refer to the Hit and Run Statute. This law mandates that any driver involved in a collision resulting in injury or death must stay at the location.
