La Mesa, CA (January 2, 2026) – The California Highway Patrol reports that a man was fatally struck by a vehicle early Monday morning while walking on Interstate 8 near Jackson Drive. The auto-pedestrian crash happened around 1:18 a.m. On the eastward side of Interstate 8. Units from the CHP, La Mesa Police Department, and local firefighters arrived at the scene following reports of a pedestrian in the traffic lanes. Officials state the man was walking on the freeway when struck by an oncoming vehicle. Even with emergency response efforts, the victim died from his injuries and was declared dead at the scene. After the collision, La Mesa police helped manage traffic by closing the Spring Street on-ramp to eastbound I-8. The freeway stayed closed for several hours while CHP investigators examined the scene and collected evidence. The pedestrian’s identity has not yet been disclosed until next of kin are notified. The investigation is still underway. We extend our deepest condolences to the victim’s family and loved ones during this time of grief.
