Irwindale, CA (May 17, 2026) – A fatal pedestrian collision forced the closure of multiple lanes on Interstate 605 early Saturday morning, May 16, near Rivergrade Road in Irwindale. The crash was reported at approximately 5:48 a.m. , after several people called to report a woman walking down the center of the southbound freeway. The dispatch logs reported that the pedestrian crossed the center divider and remained standing in the active traffic lanes as cars drove past. Further reports indicated that the individual then lay down in one of the lanes. This occurred by approximately 5:57 a.m. Emergency responders arrived and found a pedestrian lying on the right shoulder of the freeway, possibly unconscious. The accident significantly disrupted traffic flow as emergency crews worked at the scene, leading to a SigAlert and the shutdown of lanes 2 through 4. Tow trucks were subsequently called in to help recover vehicles linked to the crash. Officials have not yet released the victim’s identity or confirmed the total number of vehicles involved. The cause and circumstances of the deadly incident are still under investigation. We extend our deepest condolences to the victim’s family and all those impacted by this tragedy.
