Irvine, CA (May 15, 2026) – An 87-year-old man was killed Thursday night, May 14, after being struck by a Tesla SUV at the intersection of Irvine Boulevard and Groveland, near the Stonegate and Woodbury neighborhoods. Irvine police said officers and emergency crews responded to reports of a collision between a Tesla SUV and a man riding a mobility scooter. Emergency responders tried to save the man’s life at the scene, but he was declared dead from his injuries. According to investigators, the Tesla was heading west on Irvine Boulevard and had a green light when the crash occurred. Officials reported that the man on the mobility scooter was traveling north in a marked crosswalk on Groveland at the time of the crash. The Tesla driver sustained minor injuries and was taken to a hospital for treatment. The driver is cooperating with authorities, who do not suspect impairment played a role in the collision. The Irvine Police Department’s Major Accident Investigation Team is continuing its probe into the crash. Our heartfelt condolences are extended to the family of the person who died while riding the scooter.
**Crosswalk Crash Factors Involving Vehicles and Mobility Devices** Crosswalk accidents between mobility scooters and cars frequently necessitate a detailed examination of traffic signal intervals, pedestrian behavior, and driver sightlines. Investigators usually assess whether each party had a clear right-of-way according to traffic signals and crossing conditions. In many instances, the layout of the intersection and available sightlines can influence how rapidly drivers and pedestrians become aware of one another. Video footage, eyewitness testimonies, and vehicle records could assist in piecing together the timeline of events. Lighting and traffic volume are also frequently assessed, particularly at major intersections close to residential neighborhoods.
