Imperial County, CA (May 12, 2026) – Several people died in a two-vehicle collision Sunday night on northbound State Route 86 near Red Earth. Emergency responders arrived on scene around 8:28 p.m. according to reports of a crash between a white Kia and a black SUV. Early indications suggested the vehicles had collided head-on, scattering debris and involving multiple occupants in the northbound lanes. Officials reported that at least one individual was discovered unconscious on the road, while other passengers were found injured at the scene. Initial reports suggested multiple fatalities and serious injuries, although the precise number of victims is still being verified. The accident led to a complete shutdown of the northbound lanes as emergency services responded to the scene. Traffic delays stretched for miles after vehicles were rerouted and some lanes were partially reopened during the overnight response. The names of those involved have not been disclosed. Officials are still investigating the cause of the collision, and additional information will be released as soon as it is available. We offer our deepest sympathies to the families of those who lost their lives. What Investigators Examine Following Multi-Vehicle Head-On Collisions. Head-on collisions rank among the most serious roadway accidents, as the opposing forces from both vehicles amplify the overall impact. These crashes frequently cause extensive vehicle damage and often affect multiple passengers sustaining injuries of differing severity. Investigators usually analyze lane positions, skid marks, and final resting positions of the vehicles to reconstruct how each one entered the collision path.
