Every day, hundreds of children across the United States are injured while riding their bikes. Bicycle accidents remain a serious public safety concern, with young riders especially vulnerable to harm.
Daily Injuries in Numbers
Each year, more than 400,000 children and teenagers under the age of 19 are treated in emergency departments for bike related injuries. That averages to over 1,000 children every single day. Research from past studies also shows that between 2006 and 2015, more than 2.2 million young riders required emergency treatment. This means that on average about 600 children were injured every day, or 25 every single hour.
Which Children Are Most at Risk?
Children between the ages of 5 and 14 are the most frequently injured in bicycle crashes. Boys are significantly more likely than girls to be involved in these types of accidents, often due to higher risk taking behavior on the road.
Common Types of Injuries
Head injuries are among the most serious outcomes, making up nearly 60 percent of bike related injuries for children. These can range from concussions to traumatic brain injuries. Other common injuries include broken bones, particularly in the wrists, arms, and collarbones, along with cuts, scrapes, and bruises from falls and collisions.
Leading Causes of Bicycle Accidents
The factors that most often lead to bike accidents involving children include collisions with vehicles, riding without helmets or protective gear, lack of adult supervision, and unsafe or poorly designed roads and neighborhoods.
Why This Matters
The statistics highlight how frequently children are harmed while biking. Parents, caregivers, and communities must work together to promote safety, provide proper equipment, and advocate for safer streets.
