Rapid population growth, aging streets, and traffic congestion are combining to make driving in the Bay Area more dangerous than ever. Projected growth to over 9.3 million people by 2040 places enormous stress on highway infrastructure, road maintenance, and traffic flow.
Traffic data from recent years shows that crash numbers dropped during the pandemic when fewer people were on the roads. But crashes rose again as traffic returned to normal. In 2021, there were more car accidents and an increase in driving fatalities despite fewer miles driven compared to earlier years.
Roads in many parts of the region suffer from wear and tear, poor signage, insufficient lighting, tight or winding street layouts, and frequent congestion. These factors contribute heavily to collisions and traffic hazards, especially during peak commuting times.
In response, transportation agencies in the Bay Area adopted Vision Zero, a plan to eliminate serious injuries and fatalities by 2030. This strategy includes investing in redesigning roadways, improving intersections, expanding transit options, and reducing traffic congestion.
