Grass Valley, CA (May 7, 2026) – Four people were injured in a multiple-vehicle collision on McCourtney Road across from Brighton on Wednesday, May 6. Emergency crews arrived at the scene, where four vehicles were found to have been involved in the crash. The incident was designated a multi-casualty event when first responders arrived. Three of the four injured individuals were transported by ground ambulance to a local hospital, while a fourth person—suffering more severe injuries—was flown by helicopter to a trauma center. The roadway has now been reopened to traffic. Authorities are still working to determine what caused the crash, and additional information will be shared as it becomes available. Our thoughts are with everyone affected as they focus on recovery. What Typically Happens After a Multi-Vehicle Crash in Nevada County? When several vehicles collide, the on-scene response becomes significantly more complex than in a standard two-vehicle accident. Emergency teams have to evaluate multiple patients simultaneously and rapidly determine which ones require the highest priority care. That triage process decides whether a patient is transported by ground ambulance or flown by air to a trauma center. Airlifted transport is typically used only for those with serious injuries needing highly specialized care unavailable at local hospitals. The choice to perform an airlift depends on the nature and seriousness of the injuries identified at the scene. Trauma centers are prepared to treat injuries too severe for a regular emergency room to handle. In California, roads where serious multi-vehicle accidents occur are usually closed while emergency responders work at the scene, then reopened once the area has been cleared and all necessary documentation is finished.
