Fresno, CA (May 18, 2026) – One man was killed and a 3-year-old child left critically injured following a collision on Highway 41 in Fresno on Sunday, May 17. The accident occurred just before 2:30 a.m. In the southbound lanes of Highway 41, officials received multiple reports of a disabled Toyota Camry stopped in the middle lane. Shortly after, a Kia Optima slammed into the back of the Toyota. The force of the crash sent both cars spinning before they stopped in different lanes of the highway. Emergency services arrived at the scene and provided aid to those involved. The 31-year-old male driver of the Toyota was transported to a hospital but was later pronounced dead. A 3-year-old child in the Kia sustained critical, life-threatening injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital. An adult male passenger in the same vehicle also suffered serious injuries and received medical treatment. Additional details were not disclosed in the first report, but officials are still looking into what caused the crash. Our thoughts are with the man’s family and friends, and we’re keeping the injured child and other passenger in our minds as well.
Dangers When a Disabled Vehicle Stops on a Highway A broken-down vehicle on a highway poses a major safety risk, particularly if it becomes stranded in a live traffic lane.
