Fremont, CA (April 1, 2026) – A major crash on southbound I-680 north of Washington Boulevard in Fremont sent a woman into cardiac arrest and closed several traffic lanes. The incident was reported early Monday morning on March 30. It involved a collision between a gray BMW and a purple Dodge Charger. After the collision, the Charger stopped, blocking lanes three and four of the southbound freeway. A 55-year-old woman was reported to be in cardiac arrest at the scene. Emergency services responded promptly, and a second ambulance was sent to help with the medical crisis. No additional details about other occupants or a second patient have been verified. The crash’s cause is still being investigated, with more information to be shared when available. Our thoughts are with those impacted as they get medical treatment. How Are Medical Emergencies Like Cardiac Arrest Handled at Crash Scenes in California? In California, when cardiac arrest occurs at a traffic collision scene, emergency responders focus on medical treatment while also handling traffic control. Dispatchers frequently dispatch several units to address the crash and the critical medical emergency at the same time. That’s why a second ambulance is often called when initial reports suggest a severe medical issue. Cardiac arrest after a crash may stem from the physical trauma of the collision or a pre-existing condition exacerbated by the stress of the incident.
