La Mesa, CA (May 21, 2026) – A multi-vehicle pileup on Interstate 8 near 70th Street in La Mesa claimed the lives of two people. The fatal road incident started at approximately 7:18 p.m. In the eastbound lanes, a Toyota was reportedly moving slowly or stopped in the far left lane. Investigators said a 34-year-old San Diego woman driving a Dodge came up from behind and collided with the Toyota. A 4-year-old boy was a passenger in the Dodge at the time. Shortly afterward, a Kia driven by a 63-year-old El Cajon woman struck the rear of the Dodge, while flying debris also struck a Mercedes driven by a 30-year-old El Cajon man. The 79-year-old La Mesa man behind the wheel of the Toyota was killed at the scene. A 77-year-old woman from La Mesa who had been a passenger was transported to Sharp Memorial Hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries. The driver of the Dodge and the child were transported to Sharp Grossmont Hospital for assessment, while the Kia driver received treatment for minor injuries. No names have been disclosed after the crash. Investigators are still looking into the causes of the multiple-vehicle collision.
