Riverside, CA (May 31, 2026) – One person was killed in an early-morning collision between a pedestrian and a vehicle on State Route 91 near Van Buren Boulevard. California Highway Patrol logs indicate the crash happened at approximately 1:33 a.m. On Sunday, May 31, a pedestrian walked into active traffic lanes and was struck by a vehicle on SR-91 East near the Van Buren Boulevard off-ramp. Investigators determined the pedestrian was in the roadway at the time of the collision and was pronounced dead at the scene. According to CHP reports, debris from the crash was strewn across several lanes, prompting a brief closure of the road as crews cleared the scene. Our heartfelt condolences go out to the family and friends in mourning. Why Pedestrian Incidents on Freeways Often End in Tragedy. Pedestrian crashes on freeways rank among the most hazardous traffic events because of the high vehicle speeds and poor visibility. Drivers often have very little time to react when someone suddenly appears in their lane, particularly at night when visibility is low. Freeways are not designed for pedestrian use, which greatly increases the chance of serious or fatal injury if a person enters the traffic lanes. Investigators usually analyze entry and exit points on the roadway, lighting conditions, vehicle movements, and traffic flow patterns to understand how these incidents happen. Even short moments in active traffic lanes can result in deadly outcomes, given the substantial stopping distances needed at highway velocities.
