North Sacramento, CA (March 21, 2026) – A driver was fatally struck in the northbound lanes of the Capital City Freeway south of El Camino Ave in North Sacramento. The incident happened around 1:53 a.m. on March 20, a Friday. Officers from the California Highway Patrol arrived at the scene and discovered an individual lying in the road. The driver was declared dead at the scene. Investigators think the victim had pulled over to clear a large piece of wood from the freeway when they were hit by another passing vehicle. All lanes of the freeway in the Swanston Estates area were shut down for multiple hours after the incident but have now reopened. No further details on the victim or the striking vehicle have been disclosed. The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office is anticipated to confirm the deceased’s identity after notifying family members. Officials are still probing the crash’s cause, with additional information to be shared once available. We extend our sympathies to the victim’s family… Why Stopping on Highways Is Extremely Dangerous. Halting on a freeway subjects drivers to fast-moving traffic and scant reaction time for vehicles passing by.
