Davis, CA (May 8, 2026) – A woman was killed Thursday afternoon after she was ejected from a motorcycle and then struck by a semi-truck on Interstate 80 in Davis. The accident occurred shortly before 2:40 p.m. , eastbound near Richards Boulevard amid moderate to heavy traffic. According to the California Highway Patrol, the motorcycle was following a pickup truck that had slowed almost to a complete stop because of shifting traffic conditions. The motorcycle rider couldn’t stop in time and collided with the back of the pickup truck. The passenger was thrown from the motorcycle on impact and landed in the next lane, where she was run over by a semi-truck; she died at the scene from her injuries. Officials reported that all drivers involved stayed at the scene, and said neither drugs nor alcohol appear to have played a role. Authorities are still investigating the cause of the crash and will release additional information as it becomes available. Our heartfelt condolences go out to the family of the woman who lost her life.
Why Motorcycle Passenger Ejections Can Be Especially Dangerous in Traffic Crashes. Motorcycle riders face a greater chance of serious injury if they are ejected from the bike during a collision. Unlike cars and other enclosed vehicles, motorcycles provide almost no physical shielding in the event of a sudden stop or collision. On multi-lane freeways, riders or passengers who are thrown off can face even greater danger from surrounding traffic. Even at lower initial impact speeds, subsequent collisions involving vehicles from adjacent lanes can still prove deadly. Investigators frequently analyze traffic patterns, braking distances, and lane positioning to reconstruct how these events occur. Road conditions and the vehicle’s placement at the moment of impact can also be key factors in explaining why and how a passenger was thrown into oncoming lanes of traffic.
