Coronado, CA (March 18, 2026) – A 78-year-old bicyclist was killed in a collision on Tuesday afternoon, March 17, in Coronado. Emergency responders arrived at the southbound lanes of Silver Strand State Highway near Tulagi Road around 1:37 p.m. following reports of a crash between a vehicle and a cyclist. When responders arrived, they initiated life-saving measures, but the cyclist was subsequently pronounced dead at the scene. The vehicle driver stayed at the location and helped the victim alongside nearby bystanders. Officials stated that drugs and alcohol are not thought to have played a role in the crash. The road stayed shut for hours while crews handled the scene. All southbound lanes were reopened shortly before 7:00 p.m. The cyclist’s identity has not been disclosed. Officials are still probing the crash’s cause, with further information to be shared as it emerges. We extend our sympathies to the victim’s family and friends. What Factors Contribute to Bicycle Accidents on Coastal Highways? Bicycle accidents on coastal highways can happen due to narrow shoulders and elevated vehicle speeds. State highways and similar roads often have consistent traffic flow, heightening dangers for cyclists who share them. Visibility issues may also play a role, particularly in spots with bends or varying light.
