Santa Cruz, CA (May 26, 2026) – A child was seriously injured Tuesday morning after being hit by a vehicle while riding near the intersection of Soquel Drive and Porter Street in Santa Cruz County. Dispatch records indicate the crash was reported at approximately 8:22 a.m. Early reports suggested a car had struck a child prior to pulling into the driveway. Later reports added that the child was riding a bicycle or scooter when the crash occurred. The vehicle stayed on the roadway after the impact, the report said. Emergency responders were dispatched to the crash site, and the incident was subsequently classified as a major injury case. The initial report did not include any names or ages, and additional information regarding the child’s medical condition was not yet available. Investigators continue to examine the details of the roadway crash. Our thoughts are with the child and their family as they focus on recovery. How Driveways and Intersection Areas Can Pose Dangers to Children. Kids on bikes or scooters around intersections and driveways are often hard for drivers to spot, particularly during the hectic morning rush. Vehicles entering or exiting residential or commercial driveways can unexpectedly encounter young cyclists riding on sidewalks or along the roadside. Because children are smaller and often move unpredictably, even low-speed collisions involving bicycles or scooters can cause serious injuries.
