Castroville, CA (January 14, 2026) – The California Highway Patrol reports that two individuals sustained serious injuries in a severe head-on crash on northbound Highway 1 near State Route 183 in Castroville early Monday morning. The incident took place around 6:15 a.m. It involved a small red Volkswagen Beetle and a dark-colored Honda sedan. According to CHP investigators, the vehicles crashed in the northbound lanes, scattering substantial debris and broken glass across the road. One of the vehicles reportedly ended up off the shoulder, suffering severe front-end damage. Witnesses indicated that the Honda might have been swerving before the crash, although the exact cause remains undetermined. The impact’s intensity required firefighters and CHP officers to extricate both drivers from their cars. The two injured people received on-site treatment before being urgently transported to nearby hospitals for additional care. As of Wednesday morning, their conditions have not been disclosed. CHP continues investigating the crash circumstances, including any role played by impairment or other factors. We offer our best wishes to both individuals as they recover from this serious accident.
