Butte County, CA (February 22, 2026) – Two drivers were hospitalized in critical condition following a head-on crash Friday morning west of the Yankee Hill area. The collision occurred around 5:06 a.m. on Friday, February 20, along State Route 70 at the West Branch Bridge.. Emergency units responded to reports of a serious crash and found a Ford Maverick and a converted Ford box truck with significant front-end damage. Officials said the vehicles appeared to have collided head-on.. Medical personnel provided aid at the scene before both drivers were transported to a local hospital. They were last reported to be in critical condition.. Traffic along SR-70 was reduced to one-way control for several hours as crews worked to investigate the crash and clear the roadway. Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the collision, and more details will be released as soon as they become available. Our thoughts are with those injured as they receive medical care.. Why Head-On Crashes Often Result in Critical Injuries. Head-on collisions are among the most severe types of crashes. When two vehicles strike each other from opposite directions, the combined force of impact can be extreme, even at moderate speeds.. Bridges and narrow highway sections, such as those along SR-70, may leave limited space for drivers to correct their path if they drift across the center line. Early morning hours can also bring reduced visibility and lighter traffic, which sometimes leads to higher speeds.. Significant front-end damage often signals a direct impact. In these crashes, occupants face a higher risk of serious or life-threatening injuries due to the sudden deceleration and force concentrated at the front of the vehicles.
