(Cathedral City, CA) Late Thursday night, February 12, a 48-year-old bicyclist died after running a red light into an intersection during a crash at Date Palm Drive and Ortega Road. Cathedral City Police Department officers arrived on scene around 10:55 p.m. in response to reports of a collision at Ortega Road and Date Palm Drive. Police state that the bicyclist was riding westbound on Ortega Road and proceeded into the intersection’s crosswalk despite a red traffic signal. Authorities stated that a southbound vehicle on Date Palm Drive entered the intersection against a red light and struck the bicyclist there, pronouncing them dead at the scene. Authorities withheld the victim’s name and gender. That information was withheld until next of kin could be notified. Investigators also failed to specify whether impairment, distraction, or other factors might have played a role. According to police, paramedics took the vehicle driver to a nearby hospital to receive treatment for minor facial injuries. Sgt. Ryan Schuelke stated that the precise cause of the crash was still being investigated, with officers ongoing in collecting evidence and analyzing traffic signal data.
