Bakersfield, CA (May 5, 2026) – A passenger died and the driver was hurt following a single-vehicle accident Tuesday afternoon in the 2600 block of South H Street near Wilson Road in Bakersfield. The incident took place at approximately 4:56 p.m. It involved a black Chevrolet sedan heading northbound. Emergency responders arrived at the scene and discovered that the vehicle had veered off the road and collided with a tree in the center median. The collision inflicted major damage on the vehicle and injured both occupants. The passenger, known only as an adult female, succumbed to injuries from the crash. The driver, an adult woman, sustained moderate injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. Preliminary investigation shows that excessive speed was not a factor in the crash. The events preceding the collision are still being examined, including the potential role of impairment. Officials are ongoing in their probe into the crash’s cause, with additional information to be shared as it emerges. Our heartfelt condolences go to the deceased’s family. What Might Cause a Vehicle to Veer Off the Road and Hit a Stationary Object? Crashes with a single vehicle hitting trees or medians commonly occur when the driver loses control. This can occur due to distraction, abrupt steering, or medical problems during driving. Road design can also contribute to these incidents, particularly on streets featuring raised medians or restricted space for recovery.
