Bakersfield, CA (May 6, 2026) – A 13-year-old boy on a bicycle sustained serious injuries Wednesday evening after being struck by a vehicle on Center Street. Emergency responders arrived at the scene in the 2600 block of Center St shortly after 7:32 p.m. According to reports of a collision between a white Honda sedan and a juvenile on a bicycle, authorities later reclassified the incident as a major injury crash. The 13-year-old cyclist’s condition has not been updated, and no further details about the driver have been released by authorities. Traffic in the area was likely disrupted while emergency crews cleared the scene and carried out their initial investigation. Officials are still working to determine the cause of the collision, and additional information will be shared as soon as it becomes available. Our thoughts are with the injured teenager as he continues to receive medical care.
Why Bicycle Crashes Involving Children Often Lead to Severe Injuries. Children on bikes face heightened risk in traffic accidents, as they lack the substantial physical shielding that vehicle passengers have. Even moderate-speed collisions can cause serious injuries. Drivers and cyclists sharing narrow lanes on residential and neighborhood streets can create extra hazards. Visibility, lighting, and reaction time are frequently key elements in these accidents. When probing bicycle crashes involving children, investigators generally analyze the vehicle’s speed, the road’s configuration, and the actions of both the cyclist and the driver. Safety gear and designated crossing points may also be taken into account during the evaluation.
