Apple Valley, CA (January 21, 2026) – The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department reports that a pedestrian died in a collision late Sunday night on Highway 18 near Apple Valley Rd. The victim has been identified as 37-year-old Hughie Sheppard. The fatal incident occurred at around 10:54 p.m. On January 18, in the eastbound lanes of Highway 18. Investigators reported that a gray 2015 Nissan Altima, traveling in the No. 2 lane, struck Sheppard, who was apparently in the roadway at the time. The Altima’s driver, a 21-year-old man from Victorville, stayed at the scene and cooperated with authorities during the initial investigation. The factors contributing to the crash remain unknown, and officials have not specified if impairment or speed were involved. Emergency responders arrived quickly, but Sheppard was unfortunately pronounced dead at the scene. The investigation is ongoing as authorities seek to establish the complete sequence of events and any root causes. No arrests or citations have been reported so far.
