On Sunday evening, December 7, a pedestrian was fatally struck in a crash on West Whittier Boulevard in Commerce, California. The California Highway Patrol reported the incident, which took place at approximately 7:30 p.m. close to West Whittier Boulevard and Williamson Avenue. Police officers arrived at the scene and discovered a pedestrian who was fatally injured in the road. The victim’s identity is being withheld until their relatives have been informed. It was initially uncertain if the driver involved stayed at the scene as required by law. The CHP East Los Angeles Office is looking into the cause of the accident and is requesting anyone with information to step forward. Summary of the West Whittier Boulevard Crash. When a pedestrian is hit by a vehicle, investigators usually examine various California traffic laws to assess liability. The Hit-and-Run Statute mandates that drivers involved in any accident that results in injury or death must stay at the location, provide assistance, and notify the police. Fleeing the scene is considered a felony hit-and-run. The Pedestrian Right-of-Way Law requires drivers to give way to pedestrians in both marked and unmarked crosswalks, and it also obligates pedestrians to be cautious for their own safety. Additionally, the Basic Speed Law forbids driving at speeds that are unsafe given the current conditions. This encompasses elements like low visibility or foot traffic.
