(Los Angeles, CA) Late on Monday night, October 20, a pedestrian lost their life in a crash on the southbound 110 Freeway close to downtown Los Angeles. It appears the individual either fell or jumped from a vehicle before being hit by several cars, as reported by the California Highway Patrol. The incident took place around 11:21 p.m. located near West 23rd Street in the southbound lanes of the Harbor Freeway. According to CHP Officer Sergio Garcia, the victim was in a vehicle before making their way onto the road, where they were hit by multiple passing cars. Paramedics who arrived later declared the pedestrian deceased at the location. The individual’s name, age, and gender are currently being withheld until the family has been informed. CHP officers shut down all lanes heading south for about two hours as investigators looked into the situation and gathered evidence regarding the crash on the Southbound 110 Freeway. Incidents involving pedestrians on highways are rare, yet they tend to be nearly always deadly because of the high speeds and poor visibility. The collision has led CHP investigators to examine the circumstances that caused the person to leave a moving vehicle, as well as how traffic conditions may have played a role in the incident. In such situations, California Vehicle Code 21954 applies. Pedestrians not using marked crosswalks must give way to vehicles.
