(La Quinta, CA) On Friday night, October 10, two children sustained serious injuries in a collision on Highway 111 after a vehicle hit them while they were biking across the road, according to authorities. The incident took place at approximately 9:43 p.m. according to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, located close to the junction of Highway 111 and Adams Street. When deputies arrived, they discovered two young bike riders with serious injuries. Paramedics arrived shortly after and took them to a local hospital for care. Authorities reported that the driver escaped before deputies got there, but they later found and arrested the suspect. The individual, named Jose Villegas Orbe, 47, from Palm Springs, is suspected of being intoxicated during the accident. He is also thought to have been part of a different hit-and-run incident in Indian Wells that same evening. Orbe, who was on probation for a previous DUI offense, was taken to the John Benoit Detention Center with a bail set at $7,500. He is expected to appear in court on Wednesday at the Larson Justice Center in Indio. Accidents that involve impaired drivers and either pedestrians or cyclists are some of the most tragic events on the road. In the Highway 111 accident, investigators will examine the driver’s impairment level, past driving history, and the choices that resulted in the crash. The key legislation governing these situations is California Vehicle Code 23152. This prohibits the operation of a motor vehicle while impaired by alcohol or drugs.
