La Mesa, CA (September 5, 2025) – Emergency responders were dispatched on Thursday night to a severe wrong-way collision on the 8 Freeway in La Mesa, resulting in one individual being hospitalized with significant injuries. The California Highway Patrol stated that the accident took place around 9:36 p.m. in the westbound traffic lanes close to Grossmont Center Drive and La Mesa Boulevard. Several callers notified law enforcement about a perilous situation with an older gray SUV driving against traffic in the slow lane, allegedly without any headlights illuminated. Shortly thereafter, the SUV traveling in the wrong direction crashed into another car, leading to a multi-car accident. Upon the arrival of first responders, they found the SUV immobilized in the slow lane, with two sedans blocking the middle and left lanes. Medical personnel and emergency teams quickly began assistance on-site. A person suffered serious injuries and was taken to a local hospital for care. At this moment, there are no additional details available regarding the victim’s identity or health condition. The westbound lane of the freeway was briefly shut down while fire teams and police worked to clear the area and began investigating the accident. Traffic was diverted for a number of hours while CHP officers investigated the reasons behind the wrong-way entry onto the freeway. Authorities have not confirmed if alcohol, impairment, or mechanical issues were factors in the incident. The inquiry is still in progress. We extend our sympathy to the victim who was hurt and hope for their speedy and complete recovery. Wrong-way collisions in California.
