San Diego, CA (February 26, 2026) – A fatal crash shut down multiple lanes of southbound Interstate 5 near the San Diego-Orange County border on Wednesday, February 25. The incident took place near the San Onofre Nuclear Power Plant and was reported at approximately 6:53 PM. The crash led to the closure of the inner three lanes on the southbound freeway, with the slow lane remaining open. The area was anticipated to experience major delays during the closure. A northbound motorist told local media that they witnessed a man dash across the northbound lanes and onto the southbound side of the freeway prior to the crash. Officials provided no further information on the incident, although agency records indicate a pedestrian could have been involved. All lanes are now open. The cause of the crash has not yet been officially determined. Officials are still investigating, and additional details will be shared when they emerge.
