Wearing a helmet is one of the simplest things a motorcyclist can do to protect their life. California is among the few states that require all riders and passengers on motorcycles to wear helmets under its Universal Helmet Law. Evidence shows this law saves lives.
Helmet laws reduce the severity of injuries in crashes. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration about 80 percent of motorcycle crashes result in either death or serious injury. Studies show helmets have prevented thousands of deaths. Without helmets more people would die or suffer head trauma.
After California adopted its helmet law in 1992 the following year saw a drop of 37 percent in motorcycle death rates as well as fewer head injuries among riders. Helmets are crucial because motorcycles offer far less protection than enclosed vehicles.
If you or someone you love has been injured in a motorcycle accident the absence or failure of helmet protection may affect legal outcomes. If the accident was caused by another’s fault or if a helmet was defective you may be entitled to compensation.
