Martinez, CA – On the night of Wednesday, September 17, 2025, Mahdi Khorram, 39, lost his life in a collision involving a dump truck in a construction area, as reported by NBC Bay Area. The California Highway Patrol indicated that the incident occurred at approximately 10:35 PM on westbound Highway 4 close to the McEwen offramp in Martinez. Khorram, a construction inspector for Caltrans, was working within a designated closure when an asphalt truck, as identified by investigators, struck him in the work zone. The collision resulted in severe injuries for him. Emergency responders took Khorram to a local hospital, where he eventually succumbed to his injuries. Authorities stated that Khorram had been employed with Caltrans since 2023. He is survived by his spouse and a three-year-old son. Officials characterized him as a devoted public servant focused on enhancing road safety for drivers in California. The dump truck driver stayed at the location and assisted with the investigation. The officers carried out interviews and collected details from the witnesses who were at the construction site. Officials did not indicate that impairment played a role in the accident. CHP investigators shut down parts of Highway 4 for several hours overnight to gather evidence, examine the truck, and interview those working on the road. Traffic was delayed in the area due to the closure that lasted until the freeway reopened early Thursday morning. Governor Gavin Newsom extended his condolences on Thursday, acknowledging Khorram’s service and expressing sympathy to his family, friends, and colleagues who are mourning his death. The investigation into the crash is still in progress, and officials have yet to provide information regarding the truck’s speed or the safety conditions at the location during the incident. There are also wrongful death claims associated with this matter.
