In Homeland, CA, a 32-year-old man from Hemet was hit and killed in an accident on Highway 74 early Friday morning when he entered the roadway without using a crosswalk, according to officials. The California Highway Patrol stated that the incident took place shortly after midnight on eastbound Highway 43183, just past Melba Avenue. Officer Mike Lassig reported that a man was seen walking on the north side of the road. He then tried to cross the four-lane road. Lassig added that the pedestrian managed to get across the westbound lanes. Suddenly, the man stepped right into the way of a 2003 Kia Sorrento heading east at approximately 45 miles per hour. The 18-year-old driver from Hemet quickly halted following the collision. Emergency responders from the Riverside County Fire Department reached the location shortly and declared the man deceased on site. No one has been arrested, and officials noted that the closest designated crosswalk is almost a mile away at Leon Road.
